[ ... Well, he's not wrong. But much in the way that Ichika lights up over sweets (without half the manic energy), Tsubomi's entire being seems to glow with happiness and she's suddenly peering at him rather earnestly. ]
[He dug his own grave, and he's just realizing his mistake moments too late. Tsubomi, fittingly enough to her name, was an expert on flowers much like her grandmother, and was now asking him--who he just claimed to be an expert--on his favourite one.
Oh god.
She leans in closer, those earnest scarlet eyes looking into his blue ones, the sparkle practically outmatching his own.
[His panic is shown briefly on his face as she passes him, over towards...what else, a patch of blue flowers. Truth be told...those were the ones he meant--but certainly not the name or anything about them.]
Ah, yeah! Those...
[He walks over to them with her, crouching down to get a better look.]
They smell like the flowers I've seen back home...
[Good question. Where should he go with this one? Strawberry Hill was the honest answer, and he could follow up further questions with more accurate information...but would France be better?
He studied there, after all.
But France was filled with painful memories, more than Strawberry Hill ever gave him. He'll choose the lesser of two evils.]
Strawberry Hill, it's pretty far from here, but still in Japan.
It was a place known for making delicious sweets, so things like flowers and fruit were common there.
[ ... Oh. Well, now she can honestly understand why there were so many girls outside clamoring to see him. Tsubomi's only real saving grace from Fluster is the fact that they're talking about flowers. ]
I'd really like to try that some day! I'd heard of lavender macarons, so it wouldn't really be much of a stretch...
[Lavender macarons... while his specialty was waffles, he'd remembered the recipe easy enough. All he had to do was make sure he whipped the meringue just right...]
I could probably make it...
[His voice is soft, a mutter as he watches her attention focus on him.]
maybe...Honey cream filling?
[Why is he so nervous? Is it because he's making his own recipes instead of opting for what Ciel thought was best?]
[It's like Tsubomi threw a switch, because Pikario's stuttering widly and waving his arms, his face turning as rosey as her hair.]
I-I...!
Not anything worth talking about! [At least, that's what he THOUGHT in his mind. His heart wanted to bake more than anything, but with being tainted by dark kirakiraru, he couldn't even bear seeing what he could produce.
No matter how much he analyzed recipes in his head.]
I haven't in so long anyway...it probably wouldn't turn out good.
I think something like that would never really be lost... so long as you have the heart to keep trying, I'm sure whatever you made would turn out delicious!
[She sounds just like Ciel. Rio's fist clenches, only to loosen immediately when he finds he doesn't have nearly the amount of drive to fight this girl back. After all, she doesn't know his sins..
And he came to start a new life here, didn't he?]
It's not that easy...
[His eyes travel, looking over to Coupe for help. That...dead eye stare maybe not say much to everyone else, but he can see the unseen knowing expression that fairy has.
'So you've met Tsubomi'.]
But I guess if you want, I'll make you waffles to prove it. If you show me how this greenhouse works.
[ You doomed yourself, Pikario. He probably should have realized that any relation of Cure Flower's would be trouble... in her own, unassuming, gentle way.
But Tsubomi brightens and presses her palms together, nodding rapidly. She would have muttered something bashfully and shuffled her feet a good few months ago, but she's since gotten more confident.
Which isn't saying much, considering how she's still a little nervous, but... this is how friendships begin, don't they? ]
I'm surprised Grandma didn't teach you everything yet... but if I can help, I'd be happy to!
[O-Oh. Well that certainly worked out better than he hoped. Tsubomi's face seems to light up at the mere thought of showing him around and teaching him.
Hell, she's practically filled to the brim with kirakiraru. If she ever baked, what she could make would be delicious, no doubt...
He's a little jealous.
At her question, his cheeks turn pink as he plays with his ponytail, running fingers down the long strands.]
[Does this girl think that Cure Flower would be that cruel?? GOSH!!]
I...I insisted I earn my keep!
[Which was true. He had been a very vocal fairy that night, huffing and puffing until he'd gotten the 'OK' to work as an assistant here. He wanted to be productive, not just another freeloader like he'd been with Ciel.]
...[Although he can't deny being overwhelmed.]
It'll all come to me after a few days, I'm sure of it.
[Her words soften him up, eyes turning back to look at the blue flowers.
Ones he now knows the name of thanks to her. It's not something his pride likes admitting, but he's not so stubborn that he'd blatantly let it go unacknowledged.]
T-Thank you.
I came here to start a new life. So...I could use all the help I can get, honestly.
..
Just r-remember. It's because I'm making you waffles.

They are! What's your favorite, Rio-kun?

What does he say?]
I uh--...I like...
I like...
Blue!
[Good answer.]

[ Tsubomi turns her head, taking a few steps away in order to crouch by a patch of flowers. ]
The nemophila? They're beautiful, aren't they? These are the brightest blue we've managed, but I like the purple ones too.
[ Maybe he's saved. ]

I wonder if they ever used flowers in sweets... although maybe that's just silly.
[ People happily munching on daisies?? ]

He can't help but let a chuckle slip, waving a hand.]
It's not as rare as you think. Lavender is used to flavour some cookies..., and some plants act as natural sweeteners.
[How long before he notices how much he's smiling?
One...Two seconds, before placing a fist in front of his mouth and clearing his throat.]
...Or.
So I've heard.
