[It isn't until she sees him that she realizes that she has no idea what to say to him.
Aside from what had happened all those months ago, she hadn't seen him since they were both much smaller. Since he'd run away, and left her with Mother. Not that she blames him for that--she'd always tried to appease Mother, be a good daughter. And she'd succeeded, mostly, until she'd saved Nebby and all of the rest.
But it's a shocking thing, to suddenly come to terms with the fact that you don't know your own brother. She can recall things about him as a child; things like the defiant look in his eyes the first time he'd cut his hair that way, or the way he'd played with her when they were small. She knows next to nothing about this Gladion, the one who commands his Pokemon with confidence and quiet affection.
She wonders if he, too, doesn't know how to process this; how to reconcile the Lillie with skin tanned from the sun and a band-aid on her skinned knee with the child he'd once known.
Her expression is nothing short of determined, if a little uncomfortable.]
Of course, I did. You're my brother. And Alola is my home.
[Did he think she was gone forever? Lillie feels as though she's stating the obvious. She fidgets with her backpack, rocking back on her heels, before moving closer.]
I would've thought you would be back at Aether, with Wicke.
[While Lillie has only vague memories of their childhood, Gladion had remembered them more than anything. Before he ran away, he remembered his mother's smothering love for them, and how claustrophobic it grew the older he got. He remembers the small girl who walked up to him asking him to fix her braid, or tugging his arm asking to play with him. He remembers grabbing those scissors one day and cutting his hair in the hodgepodge style he wore it now, to his mother's displeasure. He remembers the slight hesitance he had when grabbing Type: Null, and the guilt he had felt knowing he'd left Lillie behind with a monster. They're thoughts that kept him awake at night when he was alone, and memories that lulled him to sleep when he was on a mission with Team Skull.
Lillie had grown up by the time he saw her again, and while it wasn't on the best of terms, he was truly glad she was safe and away from Mother's reach. A small flower seemed to blossom in his heart when seeing her newfound courage, thanks to that person, and he could rest at night knowing that she too had broken away from Aether's influence.
But she's here now, and while he has all these memories of the little girl with the bright green eyes that matched his own...this was clearly not the girl he grew up with. She was tan, a little bit taller, scraped knee and calloused hands.
It's funny, little he has to say to someone he's been wanting to talk to since it all happened.
His gaze can't help but turn towards her again, tentative, but with the quiet fondness he'd been known for.]
Wicke's got it all handled. It's a lot better off under her care. She said both of us deserved to see the world.
[But her words catch his heart, thawing it from its icy prison he himself had created. You're my brother, her words say, and while he would never own up to being the world's greatest sibling, the fact that she could still call him that hit harder than he'd ever admit to. And through those walls he'd put up around himself, he can't help but give a little smile.]
Besides, I think it's a place we should go back to together.
[ It's an accusation, but a quiet one. One born of worry, more than anything else. Her voice is quiet, green eyes serious as she searches him. Lillie was never one to smile, too much; her default expression was almost always serious. The only person who had ever coaxed wild smiles out of her, the same person who now had Nebby--well, they were far from here, at least for now.
But Gladion smiles. And it's soft, the smile that she'd remembered for all those years, when she'd been alone with Mother. It brings her back to a different place, and she grips the straps of her backpack tightly before changing the subject, just a little bit.]
I've--I've got my own Pokemon, now. If we--would you like to see?
[The question is tentative, and she feels foolish for even asking. There's something dreadfully childish about it, isn't there? To be here, her own person, and yet still seeking her older brother's approval so obviously. She bites her lip, for just a moment, before offering a small smile. Lillie really is trying.]
[Guilty as charged. His eyes close, hiding the little blush on his cheeks from being flustered by his own sister underneath all that hair.]
M-my world's just slightly smaller at the moment.
[They had their own goals in finding themselves. Lillie sought out broad horizons, challenging herself to making it as a trainer as they did. Gladion, who already knew and had Pokemon of his own, had different growths. What he was searching for couldn't be found in a Pokemon League, Kanto, Johto, any of those.
What he was searching for..probaby didn't reveal itself until Lillie had stepped foot in that town again.
Maybe instead of venturing out, his goal was to come back home.]
...
Your...Pokemon?
[That gets his attention, green eyes snapping right back open to cross paths with hers. That's right...she'd never had a true Pokemon of her own. The Cosm--...Nebby was just under her guard.
An almost innocent blink follows, watching how her teeth sink into her lip, and how those eyes scan him for any sort of approval. The kind they both wanted from their mother, but only Gladion ever gave her.]
...Well, you're a trainer, right? All trainers show off their Pokemon....something about an unspoken rule when your eyes cross paths.
[There it is, a smile back, and the tiniest of nods.]
