[It had been quite some time since Holy Road, Fifth Sector disbanded and soccer now free from being underneath its control. . People could play with all their hearts without anyone watching, hissatsu and keshin now an expression of your soul instead of a show of power. Soccer was free, and everyone could recover from the damage that had been dealt.
And Amemiya Taiyou's health had improved significantly since then, occasional checkups and brief overnight stays at the hospital were common. After all, it's easier to spend one night at the hospital under surveillance than to risk it and spend another month or more. Taiyou could gladly make that sacrifice, and to Fuyuka's relief, he often behaved himself during those times.
That is, until, he gets a surprise visitor through his window. A small, pixie-like fairy entered, and with Taiyou's already piqued curiosity, he'd found a new friend in the cute little creature.
--
Poor Fuyuka can never catch a break. The hospital, usually a place for people to rest and recover, never seemed to have any moment of peace, from her having to chase down wavy hair boys trying to make a break for it on crutches to the daily Houdini escapes of one orange-haired boy. Today was no different, frantically hurrying towards the 'good-looking man' (as her colleagues called him) and trying to curb the shouting to a mere inquiry.
And since Taiyou's a rather...curious boy, he's peeking his head out of the hospital room he'd been staying in, making sure Potpourri stayed in the room and out of sight. His eyes scan the familiar hallways, trying to hail down his nurse.]
Fu-yu-ka-SAN!
[A playful tone, hand waving out to catch her attention.
Unfortunately, she's not the first person he sees going down the hallway.]
[ Itsuki is normally a calm, composed soul, someone who can take charge in any situation from her time spent being groomed as the Myoudouin's heir to helping run the middle school as the Student Council President (both positions she either no longer holds or won't hold for much longer, but she still behaved in much the same fashion).
But Potpourri is still a baby, and this isn't the first time Itsuki has run around in a state akin to panic upon realizing she has no idea where her fairy is. Potpourri could be hurt, or under attack, or shivering and scared somewhere, and there's no guarantee that she's even at this hospital and yet she at least has to try--
It's when the call catches her attention, her anxious gaze shifting to the beckoning fingers. It's not her name he called, and when she glances over her shoulder, it's probably the name belonging to the frazzled-looking nurse with the purple hair fast approaching. Which is fine and understandable, except she's likely going to get kicked out for this.
Her eyes, pupils blown wide with either adrenaline or worry (or both), return to the bright-haired boy and for just a second, she looks like an apologetic deer in the headlights praying for help or a quick, merciful death.
It's a shame she entirely misses Potpourri perking up from her safe hiding place in Taiyou's room and chirping out an excited "Itsuki!!", because she doesn't have the talent to sense her partner at a closer proximity. ]
[It wasn't the nurse at all, his eyes widening in slight surprise at the teen he'd mistaken for his kind, but intimidating caretaker. The boy seemed frantic, pacing the hallway as if he were going to be late for something important. No...no he's definitely looking for someone, eyes casting to and fro, nervous body language saying more than any words could. And from the looks of it, was certainly being pursued by the one who he'd just called out for himself, as she made her way around the corner to try and catch the frantic offender.
"Itsuki!!"
Taiyou's head tears away for just a split second, focusing his attention on the little sprite that had taken refuge in his room. Was it just another cry for the person she'd been looking for? Was it out of panic for the situation? No, this seemed more cheerful, Potpourri excitedly bopping about and squealing as if she'd just struck gold.
...Ah, he gets it now.
The door opens slightly more again, and the silent plea for help is met with a smile, beckoning her towards his room to hold the door open just enough to squeeze through. A momentary place to hide--as he knows above all else how awful it is to be lectured by one Kudou Fuyuka. With a soft, hissed whisper, he reaches out to take the 'boy's' hand.]
Hurry, hurry! I'll cover for you!
[Because Taiyou's already got 3+ accounts of breaking out, why not add harbouring 'refugees' to the list!]
[ Why not, indeed! Itsuki would debate this further - "this" being "hiding inside an ill and/or injured patient's room to avoid being removed from the hospital" - but after a quick second, she swiftly decides she can apologize profusely later.
It just takes a single step that's more of a bound and then her hand is clutching his; an agile twist fits her inside with just enough space to keep from hitting the door frame and even though she's aware that she just fled into a patient's room, her smile is still genuinely bright as she sucks in a quick breath-- and sheepish.
Who knew she'd find an ally here? ]
Sorry, thanks--
[ There. The two most prevalent sentiments in a single breath. ]
[Believe him, Itsuki, you don't want to be there when Fuyuka finds you. Says the victim of so many of her lectures (well deserved but no one needs to know that). With a single motion, he pulls her into his room, wrapping her around the door to hide her as he keeps it open just a sliver, listening to the sound of the approaching nurse's footsteps.
He didn't know why Fuyuka was searching for her, but he figures he can at least do her a favour and save her from being kicked out.
You know. Like normal people.]
Shh.
[A finger presses to his lips with a wink, before turning his head to peek out the door.
"Fuyuka-san! Are you looking for the strange person that's been stomping through these halls?"
"Taiyou-kun...yes, it seems like there's someone who's been disrupting the patients..."
"I can come look with you-"
"No, no, get back to bed, Taiyou-kun. We don't need you to overexert yourself..."
"If you say so~"
The door shuts after that, Fuyuka's footsteps retreating down the hallway to the next set of patients.]
She'll be back to make sure I haven't escaped, but we'll be okay for now.
[ "Disrupting the patients"... if she's very fortunate, no one she knows is going to be in this particular hospital, and word of this will never reach her grandfather's ears. It's not very befitting of a Myoudouin to cause a ruckus in any fashion, let alone a place like a hospital. Still, Itsuki isn't the type to kick herself too hard for past mistakes. If she improves herself as a person and doesn't lose her fairy (again), then surely this won't happen again.
She keeps a considering gaze on the boy - Taiyou? - as he talks, more than a little curious about her sudden savior. His name certainly seems to suit him, from the brightness of his hair to the playfulness of his demeanor, but she's not entirely sure why someone who apparently shouldn't be overexerting himself saw fit to help her.
She'd ask, honestly, except Potpourri deems this the right moment to fling herself into Itsuki's arms with a happy squeak.
"Itsuki!! You're here, you came for me!! I knew you'd come! Because you're Potpourri's partner and Potpourri picked you and you're the best, but Taiyou helped too! He's really fun!!"
Itsuki's sigh of relief (mingling with a little bit of dread because there goes the hope of maybe passing Potpourri off as a stuffed animal to everyone here) is a loud one, and she tucks her fairy against her chest. ]
I'm sorry I'm late... I should have thought to check here sooner.
[ For someone who was just running around a hospital, she doesn't seem all that out-of-breath. If anything, just finding her fairy has helped ease the tension out of her, that low voice lifting in pitch and she turns to Taiyou fully now with a nod. ]
Thank you-- for helping me, and for looking out for Potpourri.
[With the door closed and Fuyuka off to inspect other wings of the hospital, Taiyou's demeanor lightens up even more, making his way over to Potpourri, who now lie buried in Itsuki's arms. The way the little fairy called out her name as she practically tackled her, there's no way it could be mistaken as anything else.
His hands wrap behind his back, inching forward to talk to the little fairy.]
So this is who you were looking for, huh?
I'm glad you found her.
[Bright blue eyes flick up to Itsuki, her thanks accepted with a nod and an ever present smile that shone like the sun.]
Donmai, donmai! She seemed scared when she flew into my room, but she told me she was looking for someone. So I figured I'd hold her until you arrived.
It's almost like fate, don't you think?
[Her face looks loaded with questions, though, so he'll jump right into it, holding his hand out.]
Fate... is it? [ There's something slightly nostalgic about Itsuki's smile for those next few seconds. Well, she can't deny that out of anyone who could have possibly found Potpourri (or who Potpourri could have found, more accurately), she's glad it was someone who could not only accept the existence of a talking plush doll but want to help. ]
If that's the case, then I'm glad fate intervened.
[ She'll shift Potpourri (who is content now that her partner is no longer lost to the unknown) to the crook of an arm and extend her free arm to clasp his hand with a firm, warm grip. Her smile is just as bright as his, and Potpourri nods to herself, satisfied. Fate or not, Taiyou gave off the same warm and welcoming feeling that Itsuki did. She'd known he'd help her. ]
[It's okay as long as Wondeba exists Potpourri will never be out of the ordinary.
Their hands clap together, and Taiyou gives a firm handshake in return, betraying his attire and the nurse's insistance of keeping himself from straining himself. The boy showed actual strength in his personality and actions...and really, that's all he needed.
The smile on his lips is like sunshine, a little too perfect to his name.]
Call me Taiyou. [He corrects cheerfully, eyes closing as a two fingered salute bounces off his forehead.] It's nice to meet you as well.
[It only gets weirder.]
So. You're going to want to get out of here without being caught, right? [The question was rhetorical, making his way over to the window to open it up.] I use this to escape to the courtyard all the time.
[ Well. He's definitely not shy at all; if anything, his easy manner is reminiscent of Erika, instead of the ridiculously polite and shy Tsubomi. And Itsuki may have been raised in a formal family, but she's always been approachable and willing to adapt for the people around her. If he wants her to call him Taiyou, she's completely fine with it.
But there's adapting, and then there's a hospital patient working a window open with the confession that he's used it for escape attempts multiple times. Potpourri lets out an awed "Ooooh!", already intrigued, and Itsuki's eyebrows shoot straight up-- even as she follows him to the window to see what sort of distance he's been jumping. ]
All the-- are you really supposed to be in the hospital, Taiyou?
[ There's literally nothing about him that gives the impression of ill or injured. At all. ]
[He smiles, making sure that window stays propped up to let the fresh air in (and maybe let them out). How many times had he been asked that by a visitor? His health was not nearly what it should be for someone of his personality, and right now he was currently in the best condition he could be in, and yet still visiting the hospital once a month for checkups. Taiyou lived as actively as he did by his own perseverance than anything.
He tended to overdo it a lot...but he also had the drive to be healthy now. Soccer had always been that for him, but now with Fifth Sector disappearing, he could play as freely as he wished.]
The nurses say I need to stop overexerting myself...my body's still recovering from when I was sick. [You know, of everything.] But there's so much to see and do...I can't keep myself contained in this room.
I know I'm healthy in here. [His hand goes to his heart a moment, before reaching out to let Potpourri sit in his palms.]
[ Itsuki's voice is soft, but there's absolutely no doubt in what she says. As Taiyou reaches out for Potpourri, she obligingly hands her over and the fairy balances herself in his palms. ]
I'm sure they want you to be able to do all of those things too, as long as you don't push yourself too much. If you collapsed, a lot of people would be worried-- even though I'm sure you don't need to hear that from someone you just met.
[Words he's certainly heard before, both by nurses and his parents. His friends too, whenever he tried to tell them just why Fuyuka was extra diligent on checking up on him. He doesn't shrug off the kindness--he above all else knows they're saying it because they truly do care. And whether Itsuki was a person he just met or a long time friend, the sentimental value of her words doesn't get cast aside.
Those blue eyes soften in slight amusement, but accepting of her kindness.]
I know. I pushed it too hard once and ended up doing just that. I must have worried so many people that day...but there are times when you have to push yourself in order to actually live.
Thank you, Itsuki-san. We just met, but that just makes your statement even more special.
...
[He pauses, though, looking back down at Potpourri in his hands.]
Don't worry, I won't get into any trouble. So no tears, yeah?
[ Potpourri nods firmly, giving one of Taiyou's fingers a pat with her tiny paw, and a very resolute "Potpourri trusts you!"
Which, in turns, makes Itsuki's eyes soften. Her fairy takes to people easily, but it's been rare that she's had a chance to actually bond with them, since very few people actually knew what they really were. "Stuffed dolls" was the safest assumption.
Her partner really did stumble across an interesting person. Someone who so strongly personifies the sun that she'd always taken comfort in, thanks to her brother. Taiyou might have been ill, with a recovering body, but his spirit shines bright. He's a truly strong person, Itsuki thinks, with a hint of relief. Even if he does seem a little reckless, what he had said about living wasn't wrong.
But she probably shouldn't linger in his room when she hadn't been a proper guest in the first place. The distance isn't that bad at all, and she'll lift herself onto the windowsill, glancing back at him. ]
I hope I won't see you here again.
[ Except it's lightly uttered this time. Taiyou definitely seems like an interesting person, and someone she wouldn't mind running into again. Just... in a place that suits him better. ]
[To Taiyou, Potpourri was just that. She was Potpourri. You don't meet people and say 'oh, it's a human'. The little fairy could talk and had a name, and no matter what she looked like, that was that. Impossibilities and probabilities of things existing in the world only hold you up from what's really important.
You miss out on so much more by overthinking.
And seeing Itsuki herself, and her relationship with her little fairy, he can't help but find them just as fascinating, 'fairy' existence aside. Itsuki was very mature for her age (which he can only assume is close to his own), but her tone was like warm honey, soothing and sweet. A voice that, if he'd had to be honest, could heal as much as medicine, if she spoke about how to take care of yourself.
Fuyuka-san could learn a lot from her, in his opinion.
He steps back, though, allowing her a little room to make her way out that window.]
Mm.
I hope we meet again, Itsuki-san. As soon as I'm out, we'll have to have a date!
[Oh my god Taiyou you can't just say that to a girl who you smuggled into your hospital room.]
[ Poor Itsuki. She's so accustomed to getting the - occasionally overwhelming - admiration and affection of the girls at her school that the same proposition from a boy catches her off-guard. It's probably nothing more than a playful comment, nothing meant to be taken seriously, but the startled and flustered look she gives him in response is completely genuine.
... As is the way her foot slips on the ledge and it's less of an elegant leap out of his room and more of a sudden fall, which is more reminiscent of Tsubomi than Itsuki herself. Granted, she's able to land safely in a roll, ending in a crouch, but it still takes her a minute to remember the important things.
Like dignity and grace and composure and waving goodbye as she slowly straightens up and desperately tries to pretend that she wasn't frazzled at all. Potpourri, who was not at all concerned about her partner's safety during all of this, calls out a cheerful goodbye to her new friend and floats from his palms out the window to land with a decisive plop on Itsuki's shoulder.
... Amemiya Taiyou. They'd meet again, she was sure of it... and this time she'd be prepared.
