[It isn't so much the noise that catches his attention but more that the banter and conversation that had kept him from realizing what sort of chaos he was in the middle of had stopped.
The lack of focus on his friends face causes him to drift closer in concern. Close enough that every other step arms brush as he peers down at the other, smile gone and replaced by a confused frown.]
[Genda's voice snaps him out of it, blinking furiously as he regains his senses from being lost in his own thoughts. It wasn't...odd for him to go into those little states. Not really being in a trance but also enough to kind of wrap himself up in his own headspace to really notice what he was doing.
Daydreaming, for lack of a better term.]
Ah, sorry.
I was thinking about something.
[The container of miso is picked up and placed in the basket without delay, a little hastier than the first couple of items.]
[The response may have been to the direction change, but the open look is still there in the softness of his eyes. He won't ask or push about such. If the other wanted to speak about what thoughts had preoccupied him so suddenly then he'd be there to listen if Sakuma wished, even if he didn't wish such he would still be there. It's what he always does, even when he protests and tries to wriggle out of things like this entire shopping trip.
A trip he's only barely keeping himself functioning in as yet more people cross that invisible line that is his usual space bubble.]
[See? He was right, Genda was too dense to even consider something like that. There's a soft smile, wondering if he should try to see how far he can take it, even if the whole thing seemed a bit too teasing even to one of his closest friends.
Genda did say he liked him just the way he was, though.]

What part do you like about me the most?
[It's so casual, as he walks, not drawing attention to anything but the aisle signs.]
[And that denseness is just going to make this even more awkward for Sakuma. Because Genda tilts his head to the side at the question in thought and contemplation. The fact he actually took the question seriously and didn't hesitate should have been the warning sign something was about to go awry.]
Physical only or every aspect?
[It's a legit question considering they got to this point by Sakuma teasing him in regards to him changing his wardrobe to a more Kidou like one.]
[Boy is he lucky he wasn't inhaling at that moment, because he would have choked on air had he been. The way Genda had said it was so honest and blunt, but at the same time, with a certain density that he knows Genda isn't aware of how that context sounds.
His eye fixates on the food, instead of daring to make eye contact with Genda himself.
That would make the flush in his cheeks actually visible.
And he didn't want to have to find an excuse for that.]
[That makes this a bit harder, because if it had just been another volley in the teasing from earlier he could give an answer lightly. Yet, that clarification made it seem more serious then light for some reason, and even if it was true he didn't think saying 'everything' right back would be taken well.
His head tips back a little as his eyes stare up, while still letting him navigate mostly by instinct as he continues to follow. Something feels too important regarding this to him.
He finally settles on something and though the other isn't looking at him it doesn't stop the smile and his eyes softening as he focuses back on Sakuma once more.]
[There's a soft noise from Sakuma's throat at that answer. Whatever he'd been expecting--ranging from 'You show up on time' to 'You're clean', he certainly didn't expect 'Your acceptance'. And boy was he lucky they were in a more open part of the store, because his head nearly whips around so fast he would have bumped his head on a sign hanging out or walked into a display.
Never before had Sakuma's eye looked so vulnerable. Not necessarily with weakness, but soft. Touched.
It's not that he didn't love his friends at Teikoku--far from it. But he knew they were more the type to give a compliment based on performance rather than what lie underneath. Hearing this from Genda, while still as stoic as it is...
[Sakuma's action confuses him for a moment as he blinks at how quickly the other turned around at such. Genda hadn't seen any reason or tell that such a question wasn't meant to be answered seriously. Though maybe he had missed a sign and thus why the answer seemed so jarring to the other? But the look he was given didn't fit that thought. Did he somehow come off as making fun of Sakuma with such an answer?
His eyes flicker away from the other as the only sign of nerves as he attempts to explain his answer.]
You've never tried to change me.
[Even after a year on the same team there were times they'd still poke at him to talk more or seem amazed when he did speak up instead of remaining quiet. Sakuma had never done that, he's teased him and done things like this shopping trip, but he knew the other would have stopped if it was something he didn't really want to do. Maybe he never showed how much he appreciated such before now?
He may have to work on that to avoid such surprise again.]
[The moment sinks in, and Sakuma, who'd always been in control of his emotions for the most part (just not completely inept at them, like his fellow Teikokus), regains his composure, brushing a small piece of his unkempt bangs out of his hair. That's right. Genda was a dunce when it came to feelings. He just had to answer this in a way that Genda would expect an answer to.]
That's obvious, though. There's nothing to change about you.
[As much as he wished Genda could take a hint or understand his feelings, he knew that's not why he was so fond of him. He liked the way he stared blankly at the headlines of tabloids. He liked the way he kinda kept to the walls to avoid being too social.
Even if it means being kept at arms length, he liked those parts of Genda the most. They were truly, genuinely him.]
Some people are the wind, ever in motion and changing. And some people are like a mountain, strong and unyielding.
[It's not said out loud but the "Everyone else would disagree with you on that." is plain in the resigned smirk he gives. Even as he mentally pokes at the odd warmth that he felt over such an answer from the other. It didn't feel like gratitude or friendly affection, but it did in someways as well.
